The English program in Vision Guatemala aims at giving our youth access to broad range of cultures and knowledge.
Our vision is that our young people become agents of change in their local communities, but from the perspective of who? or where? The local areas here are somewhat isolated, the culture, customs and language run strongly through the local community, and we believe that English is an important to tool for our students to be able to share their culture, but also see beyond it. We want our youth to have access to a broad range of information and a diversity of cultures; similarly we want them to be able to share their own beautiful culture with the world. A part of our aim at Vision Guatemala is bringing knowledge from the outside to inspire change within, and English is an important way for our young future agents of change to achieve this.
One of the main objectives of the English program is to improve the English they already receive in their schools, reinforce what they already know and give them the opportunity to practice in real life situations. Lake Atitlan is one of the major tourist centres of Central America, so being able to speak English opens up a world of opportunities for our participants.
One of the problems here on the lake is that all of the school teachers are local and generally do not have good command of English. Similarly tourists come for a while and teach, but often they don´t have a sufficient level of Spanish. This is why in Vision Guatemala we have teams of English teachers with both tourists and local teachers working together. Both teachers bring an important element to the classes, the local teachers bring consistency, they are a familiar face for the students and know how to tailor activities specifically to our groups of kids. The temporary tourist teachers bring a high level of English and a strong desire to help out in the local community.
English classes at Vision Guatemala differ from traditional schools in that our classes are dynamic, interactive and focus on using English. In class our students spend very little time copying lists of words off the board into their books; rather we do activities that simulate real life situations where the students may need to use English. At the moment our younger students are learning foods and numbers, so in class we practice this by setting up pretend shops where students can practice buying and selling things in English.
Our older students are learning to give and follow directions in English; so we are taking the students out into the street so they practice giving and following directions in the town. This is good practice for them because it means that they can help tourists that need directions, and they themselves will be able to ask for directions if they go overseas.
At Vision Guatemala our teachers use experience to prepare classes; we experiment with different ideas and organise activities that work best for the students. We know that interactive activities in which the students move around and touch things tend to work better than simply practicing words. For example the students don’t respond very well to using phrases such as 'I would like' if there isn´t anything physically passing from person to person, this seems to be illogical to the kids, this is one reason why we do activities that simulate buying things, we don´t just repeat phrases.
The English program is part of Vision Guatemala’s academic exchange program. One child from each family that participates in the women’s program has the opportunity to join the academic exchange program. We also offer class to the sisters and brothers of our academic exchange program participants; we have over 50 students in total currently receiving English classes.

El inglés en Vision Guatemala es una herramienta para abrirse al mundo. Queremos que los niños sean agentes de cambio, pero ¿desde la perspectiva de quién? o ¿de dónde?
Las personas de aquí, conocen lo que viven aquí, su cultura, su idioma, sus costumbres, y nos hemos dado cuenta que el inglés es muy importante para poder ver más allá. Si queremos que nuestros niños accedan a más información y a más culturas y si queremos que viajen o intercambien con otras personas de cualquier parte del mundo, si queremos que conozcan de afuera para poder cambiar adentro, necesitan poder ver y conocer otras cosas, y el inglés es una herramienta que los ayudará a conseguirlo.
Uno de los objetivos del programa de niños y jóvenes de Vision Guatemala es hacer un cambio en la comunidad, si nos enfocamos en esto, es necesario que ellos se comuniquen con el mayor número de personas posibles, que se empapen todo lo que puedan con toda la información que puedan, que puedan comparar diferentes culturas y lugares y que puedan ser algún día agentes de cambio.
Otro objetivo de las clases de inglés, es mejorar el inglés que ya tienen o que reciben en sus escuelas, reforzar lo que ya saben y por supuesto que en un futuro esto les pueda dar más oportunidades en todos los sentidos. Como el lago de Atitlán es un lugar turístico, les puede dar, además, oportunidades de trabajo.
Uno de los problemas aquí en el lago, es que todos los maestros son locales y mayoritariamente no tienen buen nivel de inglés, o bien son turistas y no tienen buen nivel de español. Por eso en Vision Guatemala trabajamos con los dos, tanto locales como extranjeros.
Cada clase tiene un maestro local, alguien del equipo de Vision Guatemala, que está con sus estudiantes a lo largo de todo el año. Al lado de los maestros locales siempre tenemos maestros temporales, normalmente son turistas que tienen un alto nivel de inglés y que son voluntarios en Vision Guatemala porque quieren ayudar a la comunidad local.
Nuestra forma de trabajar con los niños aquí en Vision Guatemala es muy diferente de las escuelas tradicionales, pues nos enfocamos mucho más en que puedan hablar y entender y por lo tanto expresarse y comunicarse.
En la escuela tradicional se centran mucho en la parte escrita, se pasan el día copiando lo que el maestro escribe y repitiendo una y otra vez. Una clase de inglés en Vision Guatemala es muy dinámica e interactiva.
Cuando es posible se hacen actividades fuera del aula, para practicar el vocabulario en la vida real.
Por ejemplo, si están aprendiendo la comida o las frutas, van al mercado a comprar y así practican situaciones de la vida real.
Con los mayores, ya no solo trabajan vocabulario, sino también frases y normas gramaticales y por ejemplo ahora estamos trabajando las direcciones. Podemos ir a la calle y practicar como llegar a un sitio. Esto es muy útil para ellos, pues en San Juan, San Marcos y San Pedro hay muchos turistas y así ellos pueden comunicarse con ellos, ayudarlos a llegar a los lugares y practicar su inglés a la vez que el turista practica su español.
Las clases de inglés que se dan en Vision Guatemala no están escritas en ningún libro. El equipo de Vision Guatemala las va creando según la experiencia. Los maestros se reúnen
y planifican las actividades de la siguiente clase, teniendo en cuenta los objetivos del módulo y también según las actividades que hayan tenido mejor respuesta por parte de los alumnos.
Actualmente el inglés forma parte del Intercambio Académico, así que todos los niños y jóvenes que forman parte de Intercambio Académico tienen que hacer 1 hora de inglés a la semana y ahora además les damos la oportunidad de integrarse a las clases también a los hermanos y hermanas que estén interesados.
